We're excited to present at BMES2026 this Thursday, October 22nd! We hope to see you there!

Jake McCoy, UIC electrical and computer engineering PhD student and NSF Graduate Research Fellow

Jake McCoy Receives NSF Graduate Research Fellowship

Congratulations to Sanchez Research Lab member Jake McCoy on being named a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow! Jake, a PhD student in electrical and computer engineering at UIC, is developing tools to assess speech therapy progress for people with lingual neuropathy and exploring ultra-low-power wearable EKG monitoring for long-term heart health. We are excited to celebrate this recognition of his work toward technologies that improve people's health and quality of life.

American Heart Association 2026 award for the highest-ranking abstract from the United States

AHA 2026 Abstract Wins Highest-Ranking U.S. Abstract Award

Our AHA 2026 abstract on transvenous gene delivery won an award as the highest-ranking abstract from the U.S.! We report the results from our minimally invasive reversible electroporation approach, resulting in panoramic atrial gene expression. These findings establish the foundation for future gene-based treatment of AFib.

SRL research on catheter-delivered reversible electroporation and gene therapy presented at WCE 2026

SRL Presents Electroporation and Gene Therapy Research at WCE 2026

The SRL is presenting at WCE 2026, the 6th World Congress on Electroporation and Pulsed Electric Fields, our computational modeling and in vivo study of combined catheter-delivered reversible electroporation and gene therapy. Our simulations predicted negligible thermal change and tissue damage, consistent with post-electroporation histology quantifying damage surface area and necrosis. When paired with gene infusion through the coronary vasculature, this combined approach achieved 40% transfection efficiency. We believe this approach offers a potential alternative to PFA, also without requiring a needle or a viral vector for gene therapy. We look forward to sharing these findings!

SRL Publishes in Nature Communications

Excited to share that our work has been published in Nature Communications! We developed a biophysical framework that links bioimpedance sensing with fluid dynamics, providing new insights into the physiological mechanisms underlying cuffless hemodynamic monitoring with electricity. Building on this foundation, we designed a physics-informed neural network that provides interpretable predictions of continuous blood pressure and blood velocity, opening the door to advanced hemodynamic monitoring in the next generation of wearable devices.
